interesting story lines today and for the next two weeks is how does the obama campaign react to what happened last night in. >> oh, absolutely. >> we're going to find out. because maybe we're missing something. i can't figure it out. >> listen, i think they'll even admit, mika, that mitt romney had a great night, but they're going to go in. we're talking style here. >> i know. >> because that's what moves debates. they're going to pick apart everything mitt romney said. we're going to see it on 30-second ads. >> and all their inconsistencies. a lot of them. >> there's a lot to pick at now because there's much more specificity on the table, and some of the things romney said last night are vulnerable to attack in new ways, new and effective ways for the president. >> too bad he wasn't attacked last night. joe klein, thank you very much. >> thank you, joe. >>> ahead, chuck todd will join us from the debate site in denver. coming up, senior adviser to the obama campaign, david axelrod. and in a few minutes, senior adviser to the romney campaign, ed gillespie. keep it right here on "morning joe."

, and i think that the obama team is going to kind of double down on that over the next few weeks. >> let's talk about a piece on you gave president obama some tips on how to win the first debate. >> right. >> writing in part, this is a great little read. you wrote my final piece of advice is most simple. stay nice. no, you're likable enough comments. no jokes about dogs on top of the car, >> reporter: marking about how rich romney is, no patronizing lecturing when he has his facts wrong. just stay nice. but looking back, i mean, you say he didn't do so badly but by all accounts the president remained calm, maybe too calm for some of his supporters, didn't engage in the attacks, didn't use the bain capital, didn't use the 47% attacks, and -- and the overwhelming consensus, of course, was that romney won. what's your advice for him for the next debate? do you still say stay nice, stay calm in the. >> the first two pieces in that column may not be at pithy and important in my view, number one, this election is a choice. it's not a referendum on the president. it's a choice. which p

obama votes to concentrate on the swing voters and the undecideds closer to election day. >> yeah. earlier in the week, the pennsylvania judge ruling that voter i.d. rules, they can't be imment impleme implemented. how does that affect another key state? >> people were worried the pennsylvania voter i.d. law could make the pennsylvania contest a little closer than the polls subject. right now president obama in most polls in the keystone state is up in high double digits. this could disproportion knitly affect minorities and others seen to be democratic voters, could end up hurting them, but this ruling that the pennsylvania voter i.d. law essentially will not be the law for 2012 pretty much eliminates a lot of democratic worries that that law could end up making the race closer than it currently appears in the polls. >> i want to know if you see a big difference in 24 hours, because with the debate fallout, may be blunted by the job numbers. people were talking about thursday morning, then friday morning, and getting an early indication of how the debate may have played out in th

, there was no mention of the 47% number. that's something that the obama campaign has spent over $3 million advertising about over the last two weeks. no mention of that. no mention of bain capital. no mention of the tax returns. no mention of outsourcing. and so it seems to me that the president is going to have to look for opportunities, which by the way i think mitt romney handed him last night, but he just didn't seem to hear them. >> he wasn't either prepared or didn't want to get into that kind of debate. >> right. >> so what did romney do last night that we probably haven't seen before? >> well, i think he managed to do a couple of things really well. and i want to play this one bite for you then we can talk about it. >> i just don't know how the president could have come into office facing 23 million people out of work, rising unemployment, an economic crisis at the kitchen table and spend his energy and passion for two years fighting for obama care instead of fighting for jobs for the american people. it has killed jobs. >> the big thing he did is that he seemed to be able to relate almost eve
